1. Thinly cut off the top of the soap to create a flat surface.

2. Draw a circle in the center of the soap with a toothpick. The diameter is half of the length of the soap. Then divide the circle into a five equal parts, and mark five points. See this page on how to divide a circle without any special tools, such a compass or a protractor ruler.

3. Draw a petal shape in each part as shown.

4. Holding the carving knife at a right angle, deeply cut the circle, then tilt the knife a bit and cut the five petals.

5. Cut off the soap around the petals.

6. Thinly slice off the edge of the petal, then cut off the soap inside the petal, leaving a 2 mm edge of the petal.

7. Repeat previous step to make other four petals. Five petals of the first layer are done.

8. Draw five petals of the second layer between the petals of the first layer with a toothpick. Then cut the five petals.

9. Cut off the soap around the petals of the second layer.

10. Thinly slice off the egde of the petal, then cut off the soap inside the petal in the same way as the first layer. Repeat to the other four petals. The second layer is done.

11. Draw three curved lines in the center of the flower to create three petals of the center bud.

12. Holding the carving knife at a right angle, cut the three curved lines. Then carve the first petal of the center, thinly cut off the soap inside the petal and trim the edges of the petal.

13. Repeat to the other two petals. The first row of the center bud is done.

14. Trim the center of the soap into a dome shape.

15. Carve the five petal of the second row in the center. Then trim the soap inside the petals to lower the center of the flower.

16. Slice off the soap around the flower.

17. Draw a circle for the small rose and two leaf shapes on each side of the flower.

18. Carve two leaf shapes and a circle.

19. Carve a midrib and six small pointed oval shaped indents in each leaf.

20. Carve a small rose in the same way as the center bud of the large rose. Repeat steps 18-20 to the other side.

21. Flatten the blanks.

22. Flip the soap over and cut about 5 mm (1/4") inside from the edge of the bottom.

23. Cut off the soap inside.

24. Remove the soap with a binder clip or other scooping tool to flatten the soap.

25. Flip the soap over and cut about 5 mm (1/4") inside from the edge of the soap not occupied by flowers and leaves. Then cut out the soap between plant parts and the frame.

26. Cut out the bottom of the soap as needed. Your framed roses are done!
