Instructions

1. If you are going to make a small poinsettia, cut your soap in half.

2. Thinly cut off the top and the bottom of the soap to make flat surfaces.
Then cut the soap into a circle shape.
This soap is 4.5cm (1-3/4 in) in diameter.

3. Draw a small circle in the center of the soap with a toothpick.
This circle is about 1 cm (3/8 in) in diameter.
Holding your carving knife at a right angle to the top, cut the circle.
Then cut a tiny circle in the center, and cut off the soap around it.
Shape the tiny circle into a dome shape.

4. Cut off the soap around the outer circle.

5. Divide the soap between the tiny circle and the outer circle into six equal parts with a tip of the knife.
Shape each part into a tiny dome.

6. Mark four equally spaced lines around the circle, then thinly cut off the soap to create a shallow trench between the lines.
Cut a leaf shape and cut off the soap around it.

7. Repeat the previous step three times.
Cut off the soap around the four leaves to flatten the blank.

8. Carve four leaves. Each leaf is placed between two leaves that you carved in the step 6 and 7.

9. Draw veins with a tip of the knife in each leaf.

10. Draw eight leaf shapes with a tip of the knife. Each leaf is placed between two leaves that you carved in the step 6 to 9.
Flip over the soap and make the edge thin.
Cut off the excess soap to create eight leaves.

11. (Optional) Cut out the inside of the outer leaf.

12. Repeat previous step on remaining leaves.

13. Paint the petals with food coloring diluted with water.
