Camellia in Candle

  • I used a DIY soft carving candle (see this tutorial, how to make it)
  • Can be decorated with butterfly and leaves. I made them in different colors.
  • Soap bars can be used instead of soft candles.
  • This soft candle burns for about 5 hours.
    ⚠️ Don't leave the candle burning unattended.

Carve the camellia

1.1 Holding your knife at a right angle to the top of the candle, deeply cut a 2 cm (3/4 in) circle in the top.

1.2 Holding your knife at an angle, cut off the wax around the circle to create a cylinder for a center of the flower.

1.3 Slightly round the edge of the cylinder.

1.4 Divide the top of the center into five equal parts by marking 5 dots and carve a petal in the side of the cylinder.

1.5 Carve the second petal that slightly overlaps the first petal.
Repeat this step for remaining 3 petals.

1.6 Carve 4 petals inside the 5 petals.
The center is done.

1.7 Thinly cut off the wax all around the center.

1.8 Divide the center into 4 equal parts by marking 4 lines.
Slightly cut off the wax near the center in one of the four parts, then cut a round petal in the part.
Cut off the wax around the petal.

1.9 Repeat the previous step to make the next petal.
Make sure the petal slightly overlaps the previous one.

1.11 Thinly cut off the wax all around the 4 petals.
Divide the empty area of wax around the petals into 5 equal parts.

Make sure that you carve the 5 petals slightly overlap one another.

Make the wax around the flower level.

1.18 Holding your knife vertically, cut a wavy line in one of the petals moving the point of your knife slowly.
Then, cut off the wax under the wavy cut.

1.20 Carve a plaid pattern on the level surface around the flower.

1.21 Make a hole to thread a candle wick in the center.

(Optional) Make a butterfly and leaves

2.1 For making a butterfly and leaves from wax, put your leftover wax into the bowl.
Then melt the wax at a low to medium temperature.

2.2 Pour the melted wax into the silicone cup.
Let the wax cool down and set completely.
Pop it out of the cup.

2.3 Cut out the wax with a flower-shaped cookie cutter.

2.4 Cut the flower-shaped wax into a butterfly with a carving knife.
Carve a butterfly pattern in the wax, as highlighted in pink.

2.5 Cut out two leaves from the remaining wax.
Carve a midrib and six veins in each leaf.
Cut off the bottom of the leaf at an angle so that it fits around the flower.

2.6 Melt the leftover wax.
Attach the leaves to the flower with the melted wax.

2.7 Thread a wick through the hole.
Bend the wick at the bottom and cut off its excess.
